<image:caption>In 2013, many undergrad students from Brazil were being granted scholarships to go in an exchange program called Science Without Borders from the Federal Government. And I thought: “well, I may as well apply to go”. So, myself and other 20,000 students applied to go to Portugal. I passed the first selection, but plans were changed to the UK. At the end of the process, I was approved to go to the USA, more specifically the University of California San Diego (UCSD).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Moving out of my parents’ house, living abroad, and learning/adapting to another language and culture were challenging at the beginning, but it was so much worth it. This experience was like a milestone in both my professional and personal lives. It opened my mind to the world and its possibilities. It showed me that the world is big, but this is not a problem - this is a solution! The opportunity of doing this exchange program brought me the possibility, the ability, and the courage to apply and to do a full degree (P.hD.) overseas. If you are an undergrad and you are reading this post, don’t let opportunities like this pass if they appear to you. Embrace them!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “This is me!” Series: The Anoxic Zones</image:title>
<image:caption>My first years (2010 to 2012) as an Oceanography undergrad student were intense. That is the feeling it comes to me when I remember. An enormous amount of courses to accomplish and several academic organizations to be part of: junior enterprise, student representation, and organization of social events (from conferences and workshops to parties). In 2012, I used to have 12 fixed 1-hour meetings per week to cover everything. Yet, I felt that it was a time of freedom, of being bold and (almost) shameless. During those years I was also an intern in the Biogeochemistry Lab of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). I started this internship in my first semester at University and the professor straight away gave me the responsibility to lead the Chlorophyll A analyses. For me: I was shaking and thinking “OMG, but am I capable of that?”. Months and years passed, myself and a colleague were doing all the water quality analysis and organizing our field works - in a canoe, in a boat, in a jet-ski, and in fact, even invading a farm to collect water samples from a rice pond and running from cows while bringing our samples back to the car. As I said, we were bold! One of our joys in the field (and I should feel shame for that) was to identify anoxic zones on the bottom layer of the water column in the rivers and lagoons we were studying. That would trigger our curiosity; it meant we would have something to unravel!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Until my second year in high school, I believed I wanted to be a journalist - the Discovery Channel ones producing documentaries. But I also knew that something was not exactly right. Then, one day out of nowhere, the director of my school came to me and said that her daughter was studying Oceanography. That was it! At that moment I learned the name of the profession that I wanted to follow. This decision changed my life… and opened so many doors. I am the first in my close family to attend a Federal University, to live abroad, to speak another language, maybe even to get on an airplane (I have to check that with them). This decision and all the prior groundwork broke barriers for me.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You might be thinking “why to add a photo from yourself as a kid on a professional website?” Well, that is where everything started. Do you remember who you were as a kid? Who did you dream to be? By this age, I was starting pre-school; and fun fact: I sent my parents back home when they dropped me at school on my first day - “Bye Mom, don’t you have to go to work?” - She obviously went home crying. As for what I wanted to be, I had everything figured out: “In the mornings I am a teacher, in the afternoons I will be a journalist and at night I will be a singer (No idea where that one came from)”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “This is me!” Series: Building Dreams</image:title>
<image:caption>I grew up as a privileged person. While my parents met poverty from a bit closer, I had all the opportunities to only study and focus on my personal development thanks to them! My father has been the one that connected me to nature, taught me to swim, pushed me towards challenges. My mother since always tells me: “Be independent, my daughter!”. With her passion for movies, she taught me to dream with a different life, bigger than our small town. In fact, one of my favorite movies (it does not mean it is good) since I was a little kid is “Twister”: A female scientist leading a group and chasing tornadoes. My own experience as a scientist is not that adventurous, but what fascinated me was the expertise and knowledge about nature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - “This is me!” Series: Ups and Downs</image:title>
<image:caption>But the truth is: this was the moment I definitely realized I had a taste for science. Through this process, I learned that we can study a lot every day and there is still so much to be discovered. The more you study, the more you get to know your insignificance and limited knowledge. In fact, this is the beauty of it. This drives curiosity… and curiosity drives science (as well as coffee)! I also learned a lot about myself during this period. I discovered that being challenged (to the point that I feel mad) makes me rise and change the game. Not that I think this is psychologically healthy, but it is part of who I am (so far). I learned that I can be very resilient to get to my objective. I also learned firsthand how much taking some rest is vital. The end of history is that I had to pass through this period to get where I am today and to be wherever I will be tomorrow. Now I just hope I had learned enough to be able to pave smoother pathways in the future.</image:caption>
